Tips on using SETI@Home
Need some tips on running SETI@Home a lot faster? Well, you came to the right place, where you can find some tips on using it and how to speed it up.
- Did you know you can change the look of the SETI screensaver by modifying the HEADER.BMP file? - Submitted by Marcus Williamson
- On the SETI@Home website, it says that the command line client would only work on Windows NT. But I just found out that it can work on Windows 98 and Windows 2000! - Submitted by Tony Sutton
- If you are planning to run SETI@Home overnight to get more Units, make sure you do a reboot. After rebooting, close ALL applictions by using CTRL + ALT + DEL method, but only leave Explorer and SET@Home running. - Submitted by Tony Sutton
- Do not run SETI@Home running with the graphics showing, just because you want to watch it. It can slow down your system big time. Eats up loads of resources & CPU. Just close it, but leave it running in the System Tray. If you want to check the status of it, open it, have a quick look and then close it. - Submitted by Tony Sutton
- You could put about letting it dial out automaticly. You have to have it checked in Seti. In DUN you need to have disconnect if idle for more then 5minutes ticked. That saves time when running it over night, so it dosn't have to wait for you to get up and let it connect. - Submitted by Weirdo
- Set the screensaver to Setihome, and tell it to wait 5 minutes. Then click on Settings, and tick the "Go to blank screen" option and set that to 0 (zero). Now, when you leave your computer for 5 minutes, the Seti@home screensaver will start and instantly go to a blank screen. That will increase speed of the processing since no CPU cycles are spent updating the screen. - Submitted by PSYCHOscott
- If you want to see the progress bar of Seti@home, but not waste CPU cycles with the colour graph, simply resize the window to hide it. Move the mouse over the bottom edge of the window until it changes to a black up-and-down arrow, click & hold, then drag upwards until the graph is hidden. Now Seti@home will not waste CPU time drawing the graph. - Submitted by PSYCHOscott
